Gaines’ Mill - Cold Harbor Saved Forever Preservation | 2025

Hanover County, Va.

The substantial addition of battlefields saved and preserved in the past decade is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of you and all our Trust members. What began as a distant goal — fraught with high land costs and development pressure — has become a historic preservation effort that has already saved over 600 acres and is on the verge of securing even more.

The maps above show just how much progress we’ve made. In blue are the lands we’ve rescued from the risk of being lost forever — to warehouses, data centers, solar installations, housing developments, and more. As of 2024, more than 600 acres of land once threatened with development are protected thanks to the commitment of people like you.

“Absolutely incomparable. No unpreserved battlefield property in North America resonates with higher historical value than this land” – Robert Krick

It is not an exaggeration to say Gaines’ Mill and Cold Harbor are some of the most hallowed battlefield lands in America.

“If pressed to select the single most desirable tract on any battlefield, I would, without hesitation, select the ground essential to protecting both Gaines’ Mill and Cold Harbor.” – Gary Gallagher

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

Thanks to you, 600+ acres at Gaines’ Mill and Cold Harbor are now protected forever. And right now, we have a newly launched opportunity to preserve two more irreplaceable sites: the last unprotected tract at Appomattox Court House and the Crossroads at Cold Harbor. Together, these hallowed acres are valued at $680,000 — but with powerful grants and a $4-to-$1 match in place, we only need to raise $172,500 to secure them.  Help us build on this historic victory—make your gift today and protect even more of America’s sacred ground.
