Pickett’s Mill | May 27, 1864

Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman was determined to circumvent Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's army by sending Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard's corps on a flanking mission around the Confederate right. Howard's men found the Rebels entrenched near Pickett’s Mill. On the afternoon of May 27, 1864, Howard ordered an assault against the Confederate works that was bloodily repulsed. A column of three brigades from the division of Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Wood constituted the main assault, led by the brigade of Brig. Gen. William B. Hazen. Brig. Gen. Richard Johnson’s division supported Wood. Brig. Gen. John Kelly's Confederate cavalry harassed Howard’s left flank.
