Trust Launches Walk/Run Challenge in Final Push Toward Preservation Milestone

The month-long virtual challenge invites participants to take steps in support of battlefield preservation efforts

(Washington, D.C.) — As the New Year begins, the American Battlefield Trust is launching its 60-Mile Walk/Run Challenge to propel the organization toward the fast-approaching milestone of 60,000 acres of battlefield land saved nationwide. Participants are encouraged to walk or run two miles a day throughout the month of January and log their progress, supporting preservation efforts one step at a time.

“Through this challenge, we are giving individuals a meaningful way to start the year while directly contributing to battlefield preservation,” said Trust President David Duncan. “With every mile logged and every fundraiser created, we help amplify historic sites across the country.”

Participants can join the challenge through Facebook and track their miles using apps like Strava or similar self-reporting tools. As part of the challenge, participants are invited to create fundraisers through an online form to support battlefield preservation efforts and share their fundraiser in their personal networks. Upon registering, participants gain access to a dedicated Facebook Group and may connect with the Trust through Facebook Messenger. The Trust will also offer participants guidance, encouragement and tips on how to fundraise.

This initiative builds on the success of the Trust’s 63-Mile Challenge in July 2024, which raised more than $35,000 through 439 individual fundraisers. The summer challenge engaged the Trust’s online community of more than 470,000 followers while raising awareness of the Trust’s mission and inspiring its individuals to take action in supporting battlefield preservation.
