Meeting place
Volunteers should meet at the Henry Hill Visitor Center between 8:30 and 9:00. Park staff will be on hand out front to provide information and to ensure that all required paperwork has been filled out and turned in. At 9:00 am, participants will gather for a safety briefing before heading out to work on projects.
Planned Activities
This year, in honor of the 160th anniversary of the Patriot's Monument on Henry Hill, site of the culminating fights of First and Second Manassas, participants on Park Day will have the chance to help staff work on projects that will restore and beautify this historic area. These projects include trash/litter pickup, fence line clearing, and tree planting. There may also be an opportunity to work offsite on the removal of invasive species. However, our projects will be concentrated on Henry Hill in advance of planned events there on Memorial Day weekend and in early June to mark the dedication of the monument, arguably the first dedicated on a Civil War battlefield after the end of the war.
History or Educational Activities
All projects will come with information about historical and natural resources of the park as a part of the event.
Should I bring any tools or supplies?
The park will provide most items; however, it is recommended that you bring gloves (although we are happy to provide for anyone that may need them), water, and bug spray. Given the unpredictable nature of weather in Virginia in late April, participants may want to bring a hat as sun protection.
Is there a rain date?
In the instance of inclement weather, Park Day will be cancelled.
Please note
If there is inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. Any registered participants will receive notification by email if the event is cancelled. Most of these projects may be done in rain or unfavorable conditions, so the event will go on as planned as long as it is safe to do so.
