McDowell | May 8, 1862
Highland County, Va.
At McDowell on May 8, 1862, Maj. Gen. Robert H. Milroy seized the initiative and assaulted the Confederate position of Maj. Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson and Brig. Gen. Edward “Alleghany” Johnson on Sitlington’s Hill. Jackson’s Stonewall Brigade, along with his artillery, had yet to reach the battlefield and didn’t play a part in the battle. The 12th Georgia Infantry suffered 182 casualties, the highest of any Confederate unit. The Federals, attacking up the steep slopes, were repulsed after heavy fighting lasting four hours. Later, Milroy and Schenck withdrew into western Virginia.
