At the onset of the the American Revolution, the British took Patriot forces for little more than a localized rebellion, and aimed to cut New England off from the rest of the 13 Colonies. As American resolve strengthened and other European nations joined the fight, the Crown was not able to overcome the difficulties of waging war across the Atlantic Ocean.
