As a teenager, James Forten narrowly avoided being sold into slavery. As an adult, he grew into one of the most prominent African American businessmen in the whole of 19th century America, and a leading voice in the call for the abolition of the abhorrent trade that had so nearly claimed him. (Runtime 3:02)
