Second Ogdensburg
Ogdensburg, NY | Feb 22, 1813
On February 22, 1813, British troops and Canadian militia crossed the frozen St. Lawrence River to attack the City of Ogdensburg. The British force attacked in two columns, with one attacking the western section of city and the other one attacking the center section. The western approach was quickly routed by the Americans while the eastern approach successfully reached the American garrison. American commander Capt. Benjamin Forsythe rejected the British call for surrender, but being outnumbered by the British ultimately retreated.
Ogdensburg functioned as a base for Forsythe to lead raids and forays into British Canada. After the British victory, Ogdensburg was not occupied by American troops for the remainder of the war.
