Arkansas Post
Arkansas Post National Memorial preserves the site of the Battle of Arkansas Post, one of the last land-based engagements of the Revolutionary War. Visitors can explore the area where Captain John Colbert led a mixed force in an attack on the Spanish stockade Fort Carlos III on April 17, 1783. Although the British were unable to capture the fort, the site remains significant as one of only two engagements west of the Mississippi during the war. The memorial offers insights into the strategic importance of the region and the diverse forces involved in the conflict.
The memorial also highlights the subsequent events, including the Quapaw and Spanish forces overtaking Colbert’s camp and freeing prisoners. The Arkansas Post National Memorial features historical markers and exhibits that provide a comprehensive look at the battle and its impact. Visitors can walk the grounds, explore the partially reconstructed bastions, and learn about the fort's history and the broader context of the Revolutionary War in this region.
