Fishing Creek Battlefield

Fought near the junction of Fishing Creek and the Catawba River, British forces under Banastre Tarleton surprised Thomas Sumter and his forces at the Battle of Fishing Creek on August 18, 1780. Near the site is a historical marker on US-21 detailing the battle. Twenty miles away at the Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church, a stone marker was erected in 2002 in memory of the Revolutionary soldiers and Civil War soldiers buried in the church cemetery from the 1780 Battle of Fishing Creek and the 1862 Battle of Mill Springs.
