Fort St. George
Fort St. George, located on Long Island, New York, is the site where Maj. Benjamin Tallmadge led 80 dismounted dragoons in a surprise attack on November 23, 1780. The Americans launched a coordinated assault on three sides of the British-occupied fort, catching its 50 defenders and two artillery pieces off guard. Despite some resistance, the Americans successfully captured the British garrison. This raid, while not tactically significant, had a strategic impact by forcing the British to divert resources to defend Long Island.
The raids on Long Island, including the one at Fort St. George, compelled the British to allocate men and materiel to hold the area, resources that could have been more effectively used elsewhere. These actions demonstrated the strategic ingenuity of American forces and their ability to disrupt British operations.
