Christ Church, an English-style church built between 1767 and 1773, was attended by both George Washington and Robert E. Lee. Washington's pew is marked, as is the communion rail where he was confirmed. Robert E. Lee married Washington's great-granddaughter, Mary Custis, and the couple attended Christ Church. Lee and his daughters were confirmed at the church on July 1, 1853 and a silver plaque in the chancel marks the spot. The church graveyard at the corner of Cameron and Washington Streets is the burial spot of thirty Confederate soldiers.
