Under the cover of darkness, 1,000 cavalrymen of Confederate Gen. Jo Shelby's "Iron Brigade," along with an artillery battery of four ten-pounder Parrott guns, formed a battle line 200 yards from the anchored Queen City. At 4:00 a.m. Shelby attacked and after twenty minutes of intense fire, captured the vessel and the crew.
