President James Garfield, who served in the Civil War as a colonel of the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, used this house to launch his political career and was the site of the first successful front porch campaign in 1880. After his assassination on September 19, 1881, his home was the first to have a dedicated presidential library, setting the precedent for presidents after him.
