The Presidio was the oldest operating U.S. Army post until it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1994. Fort Point National Historic site was built between 1853 and 1861 on the Golden Gate. Because of the military importance of San Francisco Bay, the Union stationed soldiers at the Presidio during the Civil War.
