Stratford Hall Plantation

Built by Thomas Lee in the 1730s, Stratford Hall Plantation is the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and was home to four generations of the Lee family, including the only brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence: Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee. Stratford was also home to Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, Revolutionary War hero. The 1,900-acre plantation includes the Great House, outbuildings, visitor center, flower and boxwood gardens, log cabin dining room, gift shop, gristmill, beach and hiking trails.

Start at the visitor center, where tours begin. You can choose to go inside the mansion on a 45-minute guided tour, or explore the mansion at your own pace using one of our new self-guided tour apps, n-compass or (re)discover Stratford. You can download n-compass from the Apple app store and use your own device to tour the house and grounds, or you can use a provided device and choose between the Lee Family Tour or the Geek Tour on the re(discover) Stratford app.

You can stay overnight or longer in Stratford Hall’s guesthouses and cabins, all rustic on the outside but comfortable inside. The newly-renovated Plantation Dining Room has a new menu. The dining room serves lunch Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Dinner is served Fridays and Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
