The Tennessee River was the invasion route for the Union armies in the West. Exhibits at the museum include The War on the River, which begins with a one-half scale model of the bow of the USS Cairo. The exhibit contains many artifacts from this ill-fated ironclad and other gunboats. The Army exhibit features a collection of Shiloh field artillery, firearms, and personal items. The Johnsonville exhibit features Lt. Gen. Nathan Forrest's cavalrymen.
