The cloudiest of all battles fought in the Shenandoah Valley saw Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early's command outnumbered three to one against Sheridan's 35,000-man force. Though manning a stubborn resistance and despite a stunning counterattack by the diversions of Generals Gordon and Rodes, Early's army was eventually overwhelmed and sent reeling through the streets of Winchester, effectively sealing the Confederacy's fate in the valley. Walking trails and interpretive signs allow visitors to explore the battlefield.
