Meet Michael Hardy of Pepper Pike, Oh.
An interview with a Color Bearer member
“The opportunity to attend these excellent events and the level of expertise by the tour leaders is very much appreciated.”
Color Bearer Michael Hardy
American Battlefield Trust: How were you first introduced to the Trust, and what motivated you to donate?
Michael: I learned of the Trust over 25 years ago; I am guessing from the Blue & Gray Magazine.
Which facet of our organization’s activities most strongly resonates with you?
I support battlefield preservation, the educational YouTube videos (such as anniversaries of the campaigns), and the Hallowed Ground Magazine.
What do you enjoy most about being a Color Bearer?
I am grateful that I can support at the Color Guard level, plus the periodic campaigns.
Which battlefield sites that you’ve visited have left the most profound impact on you?
I have visited many, including Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg (Slaughter Pen Farm), Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain, and Petersburg. I make annual vigils to Gettysburg, generally selecting a portion for intensive appreciation by walking and map study.
If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I would love to chat with Col. David Ireland, the regimental commander of the 137th NY, because of his ability to think on his feet during stressful times on the evening of July 2,1863 as the Confederates attacked the flank on Culp's Hill. His regiment held the right flank of the Union line. Had it collapsed, the Baltimore Pike could have fallen, a severe logistical blow to the Union forces.
What would you like to pass on to future generations?
I hope future generations continue to support battlefield preservation and education.
Anything else you would like to share?
Thank you to the professionalism of the officers, staff and supporters of the American Battlefield Trust.
