Rutherford County, Tenn.
As William J. Hardee’s attack pushes the Union right flank back against the Nashville Turnpike, the Yankees stubbornly refused to abandon their supply line back to the capital. The disorganized and exhausted Confederates halted their advance in a cotton field on the south side of the road. The turnpike was crowded with fresh Union reinforcements and artillery support, and the open field became a killing ground for Bragg’s troops. Leonidas Polk’s corps assaults the brigade of William B. Hazen and others at the salient in the Union line.
