Ramsour’s Mill

Colonel Francis Locke's 400-man militia attacked and defeated 1300 Loyalists, gathered by Lt. Col. John Moore and Major Nicholas Welch at Ramsour's Mill. The Loyalists, completely surprised by the early morning attack, were forced to retreat beyond the mill.
First major battle won by Patriots after the fall of Charleston and the loss of the remaining American Continental Army at Buford's Massacre. The Patriot victory stemmed the tide of Tory activity in the area throughout the rest of the war.
