First Ogdensburg

Ogdensburg, NY  |  Oct 4, 1812

On the morning of October 4, 1812, Col. Robert Lethbridge led a British flotilla aided by artillery fire from Canada in an attack on the City of Ogdensburg.  The Americans, under the command of Brig. Gen. Jacob Brown, responded with artillery and musket fire when the British flotilla was in range.  After suffering damage to their vessels and a sunken bateaux, the British retreated to Canada.

The defense of Ogdensburg enabled the Americans, most often Forsythe, to use the village as a base from which to launch raids against British Canada, particularly Elizabethtown (modern Brockville).
