Second Fort Bowyer
Gulf Shores, AL | Feb 9 - 11, 1815
On February 8, 1815, British forces, many who had recently fought at New Orleans began a land based attack on Fort Bowyer. Over the next few days, the British established trenches and artillery batteries in preparing a siege of the fort. After an artillery barrage, the Americans surrendered the fort on February 12, 1815.
Days after the British took control of Fort Bowyer news arrived that the Treaty of Ghent had been signed the previous Christmas Eve. As such, the British withdrew, and Fort Bowyer was returned to American control.
