Second Fort Meigs
Perrysburg, OH | Jul 21 - 27, 1813
On July 21, 1813, Col. Henry Procter began a second siege of Fort Meigs. Lacking artillery, the British and their Native Americans allies staged a mock battle making it seem that the American relief column was under attack in an attempt to draw the Americans from the fort. The garrison’s commander Maj. Gen. Green Clay refused to leave the fort. A heavy rain stopped the mock battle and the British forces slowly withdrew over the following days.
Only a half dozen American casualties occurred during the second siege of Fort Meigs and there were no reports of British or Indian casualties. The greatest damage occurred to Col. Procter's reputation among the Indians as he had twice failed to take the American fortification. Shortly after this, Col. Procter met with disaster at Fort Stephenson and after Dudley's Defeat, the British would not win an engagement with the Americans in the Northwest.
