A key action in the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign, this September 21-22, engagement came on the heels of the Confederate retreat from Third Winchester. Despite holding a formidable defensive position at what was called the "Gibraltar of the Valley", Sheridan's forces overwhelmed Early's line, sending them retreating toward Waynesboro and opening the way for Sheridan to carry out the Federal scorched-earth policy in the valley known as "The Burning."
