Griswoldville was a factory town with a variety of mills including an armament factory that produced Griswold pistols and other equipment. On November 22, 1864, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's right wing, on their March to the Sea, destroyed the town, then defeated an attack by the Georgia militia. This attack was the last major infantry opposition on the March to the Sea. A 17-acre tract that was the site of the battle has been purchased and preserved; it is managed by Georgia State Parks as an unmanned site.
