In June 1864, Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston delayed Gen. William T. Sherman's advance toward Atlanta for two weeks at Kennesaw Mountain. The 2,922 acre national park preserves the battleground where Johnston's army temporarily stopped the Union advance southward.
