President Rutherford B. Hayes saw much active service as a Union officer during the Civil War. He was wounded five times - the most serious wound was inflicted during the Sept. 14, 1862 Battle of South Mountain. Hayes, who commanded the 23rd OVI, rose to the rank of Brevet Major General. In 1864, while still in the army, Hayes was elected to Congress despite a refusal to leave active duty to campaign. The Hayes Presidency (1877-1881) concentrated on re-unifying the country in the aftermath of the War.
