During the American Revolution, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, constructed in 1764, stood as a pivotal landmark. Its strategic importance was underscored by its role as a navigational aid into New York Harbor. Recognizing its significance, the British fortified the lighthouse, stationing Loyalist troops there for the remainder of the war.
Today, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse remains the nation's oldest continuously operating lighthouse. Visitors can explore its rich history and the surrounding area, which also features other historical sites such as the Fort Hancock and the Hartshorne Woods Park, offering a deeper understanding of New Jersey's role in American history.
