Sandy Creek

Jefferson County, NY  |  May 29 - 30, 1814

On September 30, 1814, American forces sailing along Sandy Creek to avoid the British blockade of Sacketts Harbor were met by a British flotilla.  The American troops, along with their Oneida allies, established a defense consisting of artillery and riflemen. The Americans ambushed the pursuing British flotilla leading to the capture of the British vessels and continuation of the naval supplies to Sacketts Harbor.

Not only did the Americans preserve crucial naval supplies, but the American forces also inflicted serious casualties on the attacking British with nearly 200 killed or captured. The equipment went to Sacketts Harbor to be fitted onto waiting vessels. In turn, these vessels helped break the blockade of the harbor and shift the balance of power on Lake Ontario.
