Located on Highway 82 West on the banks of the Yazoo Pass connecting the Yazoo and Tallahatchie Rivers, Fort Pemberton was a hastily constructed fortification consisting of cotton bales and timber logs. A significant military battle occurred here when Confederate forces successfully drove back three Union ironclads, forcing Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to seek another route to Vicksburg. A historical marker is located on Highway 82. The nearby Cottonlandia Museum contains artifacts from the Union sidewheel steamship Star of the West, which fired the first shots of the Civil War as she unsuccessfully tried to resupply the Union forces at Fort Sumter.
